Vesca is a 23-years-old widow from Wum in the North West region of Cameroon. She was just two weeks pregnant when her husband was shot and killed during the Anglophone crisis in Wum back in early 2019, making her a young widow. Running for her life, Vesca had to trek for days to get to the next village, and then was helped to Bamenda town. She was taken in by a relative, but life proved challenging for all the internally displaced persons (IDP) from Vesca’s village.
As a pregnant young woman with no means to start life all over, Vesca had to live at the mercy of neighbors and the church family till delivery. She later attended a CVW meeting last year, with her one-month old baby, and was selected to receive financial support to help startup a business. With the funds, Vesca started a small business, hawking basic household items like detergents, laundry soap e.t.c. She had nobody to help her out with her baby, so she would go around the city – under sun or rain – with her baby on her back, hawking.
Still with the support from the CVW, Vesca decided to go back to school, and sat for the GCE Ordinary Level exams, which she passed. On October 25, 2020 (see picture attached), the CVW celebrated her milestone with her during the CVW’s Back-To-School event for semi-orphans (children belonging to the widows we have sponsored and those on our waiting list) in Bamenda. To encourage her for her determination and resilience, she received another donation.
Vesca continues hawking for a living. She has vowed to sit in for the GCE Advanced Level exams this academic year, and the CVW are standing with her all the way.
